The Murder of Seamus Ludlow in County Louth, May 1976. Towards a public inquiry? |
|
The Argus, 30 September 2005: Minister raised Ludlow murder with NI Secretary Local Minister Dermot Ahern has confirmed that in the last week he has spoken to Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Peter Hain in relation to an investigation into the death in 1976 of north Louth man, Seamus Ludlow. In his role as Foreign Affairs Minister, Minister Ahern approached the Northern Ireland Secretary with regard to seeking co-operation from the northern and British authorities in relation to the Ludlow inquiry. Speaking to the media at the official opening of the Dundalk Western By-Pass on Monday, Minister Ahern responded to queries about an alleged "cover-up" or "lack of co-operation" from Garda headquarters. "As far as I am concerned anyone involved in any cover-up should be prosecuted," said the Minister. He added that having spoken to Peter Hain on Wednesday last about the investigation, he was confident that the truth would come out in relation to Seamus Ludlow's death. "Peter Hain indicated that the northern and British authorities would assist as much as they could, although there are security concerns to take into account." The Minister pointed out that a report into the death of the 47 year old forestry worker at Mountpleasant in 1976 is expected to go to the government shortly. It
was revealed at the recent inquest in Dunalk that the identity of the men who
murdered Seamus Ludlow was known to Gardai 18 months after his death 29 years
ago but no moves had ever been done to brring them to justice.
