The Dundalk Democrat, 12 July 2006: Barron Report is a step closer to the truth At 6.20pm on Friday December 19 1975 the lives of the Watters and Rooney families were changed forever when Hugh Watters and Jack Rooney were killed in the Dundalk bombing. Kay's Tavern on Crowe Street was completely demolished by the explosion and nearby buildings were damaged. The Town Hall clock stopped at 6.20pm. Hugh Watters was carried from the wreckage of Kay's Tavern while Jack Rooney was found lying by the bar entance. In the hours and days that followed the scene was visited by mInister for Defence Patrick Donegan and Gda Commissioner Edmund Garvey and Minister for Justice Patrick Cooney The Mid Ulster UDA claimed responsibility for the bombing and in a statement said "The bombs at Dundalk and Silverbridge were not intended to cause injury". Now, over 30 years later the publication of the Baron Report into the Dundalk Bombing is the families' next stage in getting closer to the truth on what actually happened that night.
